Artist Kudzanai Chiurai is Blackstar. Hailed as Africa’s Che Guevera his weapon is his paintbrush rather than a gun. Director Adze Ugah goes in search of the man behind the myth.
Zimbabwean painter Kudzanai Chiurai – Kudzi –lives in exile in Johannesburg with a cult following in the contemporary South African art scene. His work packs a mighty political and cultural punch. His friends and fans call him Che. His vast canvasses -part paintings, part graffiti - rage at the failure of African leaders from Mugabe to Zuma and his own generation is lampooned with their American hip hop worship of money and violence. The artist is outwardly calm but the work seethes. Director Adze Ugah examines both this compulsion to create and provoke.
